Vehicle upgrades

How to upgrade your car: top speed, acceleration, handling and trunk. Every part, what it does and how many upgrades fit in each car. Upgrades are not lost on death.

Vehicle upgrades improve a car’s characteristics: top speed, acceleration, handling and trunk capacity. Upgrades are not lost on death: an installed part stays in the car.

What you need

A car of your own. Upgrades go only on your own car, not on a rented one. And there is no car of your own without a house of your own, see Base and Plot. A purchased car doesn’t disappear after death.

Parts. They are researched in Larry’s Tree and bought on the Trade Laptop. Parts unlock in the tree after the matching car, so the further you have progressed through cars, the more parts are available.

How to install an upgrade

  1. Open the hood. Walk up to your car and open the hood.
  2. Drag the part into a slot. The car has slots for different parts. Drag the part from your bag into a matching slot.
  3. Check the characteristics. The car key card shows how top speed, handling and acceleration have grown.

Top speed, acceleration and handling

Each part improves one characteristic. A line of parts has several levels: the next level unlocks in the tree after the previous one and gives more.

Top speed. The ECU and its improved versions.

Acceleration. The Turbo Kit and the Intercooler, each with two levels.

Handling. The Steering Rack and the Racing Rotor.

Trunk

A trunk is made of inventory rows for items and cargo slots for cargo. Two kinds of parts expand it. How many of them you can install depends on the car: see the table below.

“Rows” and “Cargo”: how many rows and cargo slots the car has without upgrades. “Bag slots” and “Rack slots”: how many Trunk Bags and Cargo Racks can be installed.

Car Rows Bag slots Cargo Rack slots
Fukurou Tensa 2 1 1 1
Longhorn Van 8 2 6 3
Royal E 3 1 2 1
Longhorn Titan 6 2 6 1
Royal J 6 3 4 2
Longhorn Wild 3 1 1 1
Buletti Soltempra 2 1 0 0

For example, a Longhorn Van with three Reinforced Cargo Racks holds 6 + 3 × 2 = 12 cargo. A Buletti Soltempra holds no cargo at all, even with upgrades.

Police Radio

The Police Radio helps track patrol cars nearby and the collision feed in Looty Bay. It doesn’t drop on death either.

Cars

Cars are bought as keys on the Trade Laptop, and the next car unlocks in the tree after the previous one. For better cars you need to move to a higher-level district.
